4.James is an Auckland-based Designer Director with more than 12 years experience in delivering fine visual content to clients. He is interested in making things surprising and new, good ideas and collaborating with people who get excited about what they do. James is a proven can-do, will-deliver, easy-going kind of guy with a solid background in motion graphics, design, photography, visual effects, post-production and video art. His visual style is innovative, beautiful and pleasing to the eye, but he also believes that if you really want to get your message across then it helps to be able to tell a decent story.

Alongside fine-tuning the making of a good coffee, James graduated with a degree in design and visual communication from Unitec back in the nineties. He then worked at FAT Animation for seven years as an Animation Director and Flame Artist, primarily on TVCs, whilst almost always managing to have at least one adventurous personal project or music video on the go after hours. His multi-screen artwork UMBO, produced in collaboration with audio artist rotor+, was commissioned for the Auckland Arts Festival AK03, and after showing at the St James Theatre was subsequently selected for festivals in Canada, Germany and Greece. He was a finalist in the third 48Hour Film Festival, directed music videos for StrawpeopleFat Freddy’s Drop and Pitch Black and created video works for Black Grace dance company.

One day James decided he’d been in the same, albeit very nice place for quite some time and wanted to have a bit more of a look around. So he jumped on a plane to London and spent 5 years happily working almost non-stop as a freelance Design Director there, squeezing in semi-regular excursions to ‘the Continent’ for injections of sunshine and cheese and fine wine. While living in the UK James worked on a wide range of television, branding and animation projects for various companies such as Red Bee Media, Turquoise, Nickelodeon and Light, including the design and direction of a series of ten channel idents for the re-branding of the UKTV History and Food channels. He also completed and exhibited an ambitious 360° video installation art project, Rounds.
